Choose the Gmail signature setting for your device
Your Gmail signature change starts with the place where you send the messages and the account that needs the edit. Gmail on a computer has a signature editor under General; the Gmail app on Android has a Mobile signature setting. Choose the path for the device before changing the text. The menus and the final save action differ by platform.
Use this route guide to choose where to start:
- Computer: Open Gmail’s full settings and edit the selected signature under General.
- Android: In the Gmail app, choose the Google Account you want to update, then open Mobile signature.
- iPhone or iPad: In the Gmail app, open Signature settings under Compose and reply. This signature applies only to emails sent from the Gmail app; if you use multiple accounts in the app, change the setting for each one.
The computer route selects a signature in the full settings page. The Android route selects an account in the app. On iPhone or iPad, the app-only scope and account-by-account setting are also part of the decision.
Your intended sending context and account determine which mobile setting to open. If you use Gmail on iPhone or iPad, use the app signature for mail sent from that app, and identify the account that needs its own setting. On Android, select the relevant Google Account before tapping Mobile signature. If you want to edit a signature listed in Gmail’s computer settings, use the computer route instead.
Edit an existing signature in Gmail on a computer
The computer signature editor is under General in Gmail’s full settings. Follow this route to find an existing signature, change its text, and save the edit:
- Open Gmail on your computer.
- At the top right, select Settings, then See all settings.
- Under General, scroll to Signature.
- Select the signature you want to edit.
- Make your changes in the text box.
- At the bottom of the page, select Save Changes.
The selected signature and the text box are separate parts of the edit. First choose the existing signature you mean to change; then edit its text. If you select a different entry, you are no longer editing the one you intended, so check the selected entry before changing the wording. Finish with Save Changes at the bottom of the page. That final step is part of the computer instructions.
Some Gmail settings can only be changed on a computer. If the setting you need is unavailable in the app, open Gmail on a computer and use the full-settings route. For an existing signature listed under General, go to Signature, select the intended entry, edit its text, and select Save Changes.
Change the signature in the Gmail app on Android
The Android Gmail app puts its signature control under Mobile signature in the selected Google Account’s settings. Open the app and follow these steps:
- Open the Gmail app.
- At the top left, tap Menu.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Settings.
- Choose the Google Account whose signature you want to change.
- Tap Mobile signature.
- Enter the revised signature text.
- Tap OK.
The account choice comes before Mobile signature in the Android steps. If you use more than one Google Account in the app, choose the one associated with the signature you mean to edit. If you opened the wrong account’s settings, return to Settings, select the intended account, and then open Mobile signature there.
Change the signature in the Gmail app on iPhone or iPad
The iPhone and iPad Gmail app puts signature controls under Signature settings in Compose and reply. Use the app’s settings to edit its mobile signature:
- Open the Gmail app.
- At the top left, tap Menu, then Settings.
- Under Compose and reply, tap Signature settings.
- Turn on Mobile signature.
- Add or edit the signature text.
- Tap Back to save.
On iPhone and iPad, a Gmail app signature appears only on emails sent from the Gmail app. Use that scope to decide whether this is the signature setting you need. If you send the message from another context, these instructions do not describe that context’s signature setting.
The Gmail app requires a separate signature setting for each account you use in it. Choose the account that needs the edit, open Signature settings, turn on Mobile signature, change the text, and tap Back. Repeat the steps for another account when that account also needs a change; do not assume one account’s edit changes the setting for every account in the app.
Check the account and signature settings if your change is missing
If a signature change is missing, retrace the device and account choices before trying another route. The computer and mobile instructions each identify a particular setting and a final action. Start with the place where you made the edit, then check that you selected the intended signature or account and completed the save step shown for that device.
Use the matching checklist to return to the setting you changed:
- Computer: Open Settings > See all settings > General > Signature. Select the intended signature, edit it in the text box, and select Save Changes at the bottom.
- Android: Open the Gmail app’s Menu > Settings, choose the Google Account you meant to change, and tap Mobile signature. Enter the intended text and tap OK.
- iPhone or iPad: In the Gmail app, open Menu > Settings > Signature settings under Compose and reply. Check the account in use, turn on Mobile signature, edit the text, and tap Back. If you use more than one account, check the relevant account separately.
- A setting you cannot find in the app: Some Gmail settings can only be changed on a computer. Open Gmail on a computer for settings that are unavailable in the app.
The iPhone and iPad app signature applies only to emails sent from the Gmail app. If you expected to see it in a different sending context, return to the app-specific scope before treating the result as a missing change. Use the Gmail app setting for app-sent email; these steps do not establish the signature setting for another context.

Choose the right path for your next signature change
Your device, account, and sending context point to the setting to use: the computer editor for a signature under General, or the Gmail app’s mobile setting for the account you intend to update. On iPhone and iPad, keep the app-only scope and separate account settings in mind.

How do I delete an old Gmail signature?
On a computer, go to Settings > See all settings > General > Signature, select the signature you want to remove, choose Delete, and select Save Changes.
